It's been a good day for Alison and I. We went over to our apartment and watched the latest Batman movie and hung out for a bit. About halfway through the movie, out of nowhere, she started spelling things about where certain things should be hung on the walls. It was obvious she wasn't into the movie much, and I've been looking forward to her input on decorating. When we got back to the facility, she reminded me that I'd left the dome light on in the van - which I had. She's pretty handy to have around. We're bracing for the stow storm tomorrow. Everyone be careful. Thanks for the continued support.

So Alison seems to have had a pretty good day today. We had a nice visit over lunch. And this evening we just hung out and had a good time. At one point tonight she spelled out, "I've decided we're going to move to Jamaica." I asked when and she spelled, "Tomorrow." So it was nice knowing everyone, but she's the boss - so long! (There's a nurse aide from there and her accent and stories of home certainly prompted that comment.) Later we were listening to some music, and I positioned my phone next to her thumb and she was controlling the music by advancing to the next or letting it play. On two different songs she totally hummed along at certain parts. I asked if it was intentional and she said it was. It's very difficult to control her voice, but every now and then it shows signs of hope. I told her we're going to listen to Home, by Edward Sharp and the Magnetic Zeros everyday because it's happened twice on that song now. Tomorrow we're going to break out Princess Dy. It's been a while since she's used her assistive tech computer, but we have a new switch contraption we want to try out. If it works as we're hoping, it could be a more simple way for her to use it more effectively and more often to communicate. We'll see. But it's been a good day. Thanks for your continued support.

It sounds like Alison's had an okay day today. She had a full day of therapy that went pretty well from what I can tell. This evening we've just been lounging around catching up on the day. And she's getting a shower tonight, and that's always nice. But all's well tonight. Thanks for your continued support.
Wednesday, December 26, 2012
So Alison and I have had an alright day. She opted to pass on therapy today, but said she'd get back on it tomorrow. She's been in pretty good spirits today though. This evening we did some research on how we might be able to use the iPad to get her connected to the world once we go home. There aren't as many options as you might think, but there are some. Technology has come a long ways and we can't wait to get her connected again. We've been waiting until we got home since it will take some specialized equipment. But we're hopeful it's right around the corner and we're getting ready. Thanks for your continued support.
Tuesday, December 25, 2012
Well Alison and I have had an okay day today. If you were looking at Christmas as today only, it wasn't great. But over the last four days, our Christmas had been pretty good. Today started out pretty rough. When I arrived to see Alison this morning she was pretty emotional. It's no more than can be expected given the circumstances, but it was pretty rough. We eventually leveled out and lounged around watching TV until going over to our apartment this afternoon. We were blessed with the company and food of our friends Sarah and Kelsey. Kelsey prepared quite the Christmas dinner for us and it was delicious. It was good to spend some time away from the facility and with friends today. Thank you both. This evening we just lounged around some more. I was able to keep Alison awake for the most part tonight - unlike the last two evenings. ; ) But it's been an alright day. It wasn't the Christmas we'd been used to. But not much is as it once was. Thanks for your continued support.
Monday, December 24, 2012
So Alison's having another sleepy evening. Today we went over to our apartment and she hung out with our friend, Sarah, while I ran some errands. It's always nice to get out for a bit - even if it's ridiculously cold outside. But that's pretty much been our day. She's supposed to get a shower this evening, so she'll be getting woken up pretty soon I'm sure. And, unfortunately, there won't be a slumber party tonight after all. : ( They jumped the gun on the neighbor going home; she'll be staying a bit longer now. That stinks, but Alison took the news really well. Tomorrow we're planning on hanging out at our apartment again in the afternoon. But today was good, and tonight all is well. Thanks for the continued support.
Sunday, December 23, 2012
So Alison and I have had a pretty good day today. We spent the morning and afternoon at her brother's house again with family. We enjoyed a nice meal together before going our separate ways. That's the extent of our formal holiday plans. The next two days will be pretty low key. The rest of today has been restful. Alison basically slept all evening while I watched TV - which is okay with me. We heard today that our roommate should be leaving tomorrow. : ) That made us pretty excited. We'll get to have a slumber party Christmas Eve! But all's well tonight. Thanks for your continued support.
Saturday, December 22, 2012
Well Alison and I have had a pretty good day together. We spent almost the entire day at her brother's house hanging out with family. It was a great time with lots of laughs. We had an especially good time doing some Mad Libs. : ) And opening presents is always fun. Alison is now a formal resident of Johnson County, Kansas. She received the official uniform tonight - the black North Face jacket. Lol. And we even stayed out past 10pm for our first time in a while. But all's well. Thanks for the continued support.
Friday, December 21, 2012
So Alison's had an alright day today. She had a couple solid therapy sessions and we had a nice time hanging out this evening. The roommate isn't bad at all. But the lack of privacy takes some getting used to. Tomorrow we're looking forward to hanging out with family. But all's well. Thanks for your continued support.
Thursday, December 20, 2012
Well, Alison's had kind of an up and down day. The weather this morning caused a delay with her friend visiting, but luckily Janie was able to come later and stay all afternoon and into the evening. That was fantastic. But this morning, we also found out Alison would be getting a roommate today. So around 2pm her new roommate arrived. So far it hasn't been too bad - all things considered. But it's definitely different than we're used to. So that's caused a bit of discomfort today, but we'll be okay. She got a shower this evening and will hopefully sleep well tonight. Thanks for your continued support.
Wednesday, December 19, 2012
So Alison's had an alright day today. She hung out with her brother this afternoon and her friend, Amy, later this afternoon. This evening we've just been hanging out and catching up. Her good friend, Janie, will be here tomorrow and we're very much looking forward to it. But all's well. Thanks for your continued support.
Tuesday, December 18, 2012
Well Alison's had an alright day today. During speech therapy, she ate an entire serving of peach yogurt! That's pretty dang impressive in my opinion. Otherwise, not a whole lot of excitement today. This evening we just took it easy. But all's well. Thanks for your continued support.
Monday, December 17, 2012
Well Alison's had a pretty good day today. She hadn't had any therapy by the time I arrived at lunch, but she was off to the standing frame as I was headed back to work. When I got here after work, I found evidence of chocolate ice cream around her mouth and she was all giggles and smiles. A note from the speech therapist confirmed she'd had about 12 bites of chocolate ice cream and she tolerated it well. : ) Next, she proceeded to tell me she'd set a new personal best for time in the standing frame - 20 minutes! Needless to say, she's been pretty happy this evening. She's getting a shower at the moment and all is well. Thanks for your continued support.
Sunday, December 16, 2012
Alison and I have had a nice, relaxing day. After sleeping in and lounging around this morning, we hung out with a friend at our apartment this afternoon. Unfortunately, we had to watch the Bears lose to Packers. Ugh. After that, we went back to the facility and took a nap. This evening we just lounged around watching TV. Alison was pretty sleepy and was out around 8:30. But, overall, it was a good day. Thanks for the continued support.
Saturday, December 15, 2012
Alison and I have had a pretty good day together. This morning, her dad and stepmom came to town to return our dog that they watched while I was out of town. Then this afternoon, Alison and I ventured out to see the movie, Argo. It was pretty good. This evening we just took it easy and are now settled in for the night. But all's well. Thanks for the continued support.
Friday, December 14, 2012
Home, sweet home. I made it back to KC this afternoon and was very excited to be reunited with my bride. : ) She was equally excited to see me, and we've been hanging out and catching up ever since. It's nice to come back on a slumber party night too. : ) And it sounds like she's had a pretty good day before I got back. A friend stopped by this morning just before going to have a baby (thanks again, Julie). Then our friend, Amy, came by for a bit around lunch and reported Alison did another 16 minutes in the standing frame AND 15 minutes on the bike. They are working this girl hard! In other, not so exciting news, it sounds like we'll probably get a roommate next week. The facility is filling up again. They let us have the weekend together, but we're bracing for less privacy by next week. We'll see how that goes. On the coming home front, it sounds like things are beginning to progress again. We've been able to involve some folks higher up at the state level and are hoping to see even more progress next week. But all's well tonight. And thanks for all the support from everyone while I was out of town. I wouldn't have been able to do it without you.
Thursday, December 13, 2012
So it sounds like Alison had an alright day today. She had a nice visit from our friend, Amy, this morning. Then her brother spent the afternoon with her. And this evening, two of her girlfriends spent the evening with her. There was a Christmas party at the facility, so she got to see Santa and hear some carolers too. We're both ready for me to be back though. By the end of the day, I'll have worked nearly 17 hours. Again, I'll be ready to be back tomorrow. We have an early flight home in the morning. So I should be back in KC by mid afternoon. But all's well. Thanks for your continued support.
Wednesday, December 12, 2012
So the word from KC is that Alison had a pretty good day today. Her dad reported she set a new personal best in the standing frame today - 16 MINUTES!! He sent me a picture and she looked so happy and pretty standing up today. This evening she hung out with her brother and it sounds like they had a nice time together. But when I talked to them earlier - all was well. It's been a long day of work for me, but it's going well. One more full day tomorrow should wrap it up - just in time to catch our flight home Friday morning. Thanks for your continued support.
Well I made it to Las Vegas for the marathon of catalog press checks that start in the morning. But I was able to see Alison a couple times today before I left, and she was doing pretty good. Her dad spent the day with her, and will be back in the morning. He's hoping to get to see her show off in the stander tomorrow. I hear she got a bit emotional toward the end of the evening tonight, but overall she had a good day it seems. With the two hour time difference, I'm pretty tired and am about to hit the sack. But thanks for your continued support.
Tuesday, December 11, 2012
First of all, I apologize for not getting my update out last night. I have to leave town for work this afternoon and I had packing on the brain when I got home last night. I'll be gone until Friday afternoon, but we have friends and family that will be helping out with Alison in my absence. But yesterday she supplied me with a good high note to leave on. If you'll remember her first time in the standing frame last Thursday, she was up for five minutes. Well yesterday, she made 11 minutes look easy. : ) She did really well again, and probably could have gone longer had we let her. I wouldn't be surprised if by the end of the week she's up to 20 minutes! Last night we just took it easy. It's hard to leave her, but I really need to go on this trip, and I know she's in good hands. I'll stop by this morning and around lunch on my way out of town. Thanks in advance to all who'll be helping while I'm gone. And thanks for all of your continued support.
Sunday, December 9, 2012
Well Alison and I have had another good day. We slept in some, finished watching The Color Purple, then a friend came by and we all went over to the apartment and hung out for a bit. After that, we came back and took a nap before I had to go get some dinner. This evening she got a shower and we just watched some TV. Nothing too exciting, but pretty restful. Thanks for your continued support.
Saturday, December 8, 2012
Well Alison and I have had a pretty good day together. We both slept well last night. And this morning I was able to run some errands before coming back before lunch. We didn't do a whole lot this afternoon. But our good friend Holli stopped in for a visit. This evening we watched the first half of The Color Purple. Neither of us had ever seen it. And when that fact came up during a conversation with one of the aides here, the next thing we knew, we had the movie. It's not a light movie, but it's pretty good so far. But we're all hunkered down for the night. Thanks for your continued support.
Friday, December 7, 2012
So Alison's had a pretty good day today. When I came over at lunch, they'd just finished with the standing frame. Neither Alison or I expected they'd be back at it after just one day, but they were. They didn't have as much help, so it was a bit more difficult to get her situated in the stander. And, as a result, it wasn't quite as successful this time. Had I known they'd be doing it, I could've come to help. We'll all get better with practice. In speech therapy, she had 10 bites of ice cream. Lucky. And her friend, Amy, stopped by this afternoon for a bit. Tonight we had a double date with Alison's brother and his wife. We all went to see the new Twilight movie. I must admit, I was pretty entertained. And the theater we went to was perfect for us. I have a feeling we'll be going back soon. But we had a lot of fun this evening and are slumber-partying it up tonight. Thanks for the continued support.
Thursday, December 6, 2012
I've had a Gloria Estefan song stuck in my head all day. "Get on your feet..." - you know the one. Today, Alison got on her feet with the standing frame for the first time in probably seven months. They said she might not tolerate it well, that she might not even make it all the way up, or might only last one minute, or might even pass out since it's been so long. Well, she tolerated it very well and lasted about five minutes! She was even keeping her head up on her own. Keep in mind there are a lot of pieces helping with this process, but she really did well. I can remember her looking like a wet noodle last time we did it - with people supporting her on all sides and angles. But she's come a long ways since then. We'll have access to this stander at the facility for about a month where she'll be using it at least three times a week. In the meantime, I'll get all the accessories for our stander at home (same model) ordered so it'll be ready to use when the loaner is gone and she comes home. Getting her upright has so many benefits. It will help continue to build muscle in her legs, neck and core, help with balance and more. Alison was really excited and did so well. It was awesome to see her upright and holding up her head with no assistance at all. It's been a good day. Thanks for the continued support.
Wednesday, December 5, 2012
Well Alison's had an alright day today. She was pretty tired and opted to stay in bed all day. But she still had a good occupational therapy session where the therapist left a note with some encouraging words of impressive new movement in her right hand and improved strength in her left. : ) I had noticed the new movement in her right hand just the other day, and it's pretty impressive - especially considering there's been none at all for eight months. Otherwise, we've just been taking it easy. But all is well. Thanks for your continued support.
Tuesday, December 4, 2012
Well Alison's had a pretty good day today. The note from her speech therapist said she enjoyed some puréed sweet potatoes and green jello during their session - which she handled pretty well. This evening, a few girl friends stopped by and hung out, while I joined the husbands for a movie. We watched The Expendables 2. It's a good guy movie and provided for some good laughs. Alison was pretty tired after her visit tonight though, and it wasn't long before she was ready for bed. But all's well. Thanks for your continued support.
Monday, December 3, 2012
Well, on this day of my birth, Alison seems to have had a pretty good day - as have I. (Thanks for all of the kind wishes, by the way.) Alison had a nice visit from her brother and his wife this afternoon. When I arrived this evening, I found gifts from them and Alison waiting for me. She's so thoughtful. She had them get me a winter pea coat. We've talked about me getting one for years - and it just never happened until this year. But we've had a nice evening together. Thanks for your continued support.
Sunday, December 2, 2012
Well Alison and I had a pretty good day together. We slept in a bit before her brother and his wife stopped in for a visit. Not long after that, Alison and I went out to get a frosty. She continues to impress me at how well she handles those. I told her it wouldn't be long before we won't be sharing them anymore. Rather, she'll have her own. : ) After that, we drove around Shawnee Mission Park for a bit. As we were leaving, I asked of she was ready to go back, and she said no. So we continued to drive around. I had to stop by the apartment, and on our way, she fell asleep in the van. It was pretty cute. : ) She woke up when we got there, but we didn't stay long. We did stop by and saw a friend on our way back, and that was nice. This evening she got a shower before going to bed. She looked awfully comfy when I left. But it's been a nice weekend. Thanks for the continued support.
Saturday, December 1, 2012
Well Alison and I have had a pretty good day today. This morning we slept in a bit. Then I went and had breakfast with an old friend across town, and Alison watched some house flipping shows on TLC. When I got back we laid around a bit more before getting up and around. After lunch, we headed out on the town. We ended up surprising her brother, Jeff, by showing up in his driveway. The two of us managed to get her in his house and proceeded to hang out for a while. It had been a long time since she'd been there, so it was pretty cool. : ) After that, we stopped by another friends house who happened to be outside as we drove by on the way back. That, too, was unplanned, but turned out well. So we were out for over three hours today, and Alison was ready to lay down. I headed out to get dinner and found her sleeping when I returned for our slumber party. She woke up like she usually does when I get there, but proceeded to fall right back asleep. So that was our night. I laid in bed watching Pit Bulls and Paroles and played on my phone and she slept all evening. : ) There's nothing wrong with that at all. So we're all about to be snoozing soon. Hopefully she'll be able to rest through the night. Thanks for your continued support.
Friday, November 30, 2012
Well Alison seems to have had an alright day today. She opted to take the day off from regular therapy - which is alright every once in a while. She did do some PT work with our friend, Amy, this afternoon. And this morning, Alison had a nice visit from a couple gals from our church. We spent the evening with Alison telling me about a few dreams she's had recently. It was very entertaining. I told her we could write a good soap opera with the stuff she dreamt. We've had a nice evening together, but we're all hunkered into bed now. I've decided to stay the night on both Fridays and Saturdays now, and I'm glad I did. Thanks for your continued support.
Thursday, November 29, 2012
Well Alison seems to have had an alright day today. She had a few good therapy sessions, but I didn't get much detail on them. And she had a nice shower this evening. Then we watched an episode of Revenge. So not a real eventful day, but it was good. Thanks for the continued support.
Wednesday, November 28, 2012
Alison's had a pretty good day today. When I arrived at lunch time, she was already finished with therapy. She had a PT/OT co-treat session where they continued to work on sitting upright and leaning forward, back and side to side. The therapists get so excited at how well she's doing. When I'm not there, it's hard to know for sure how she's doing. But the PT stopped in today to tell me all about it. And it really sounds impressive. This evening, we had a few friends stop in for visits and that was nice. The rest of the evening we just hung out and got caught up on the day. But it's been a good one. Thanks for your continued support.
Tuesday, November 27, 2012
Well Alison's had an alright day today. She had a couple good therapy sessions, and she received a custom pair of modified shoes from an orthopedic company. They were her shoes but modified to accommodate her right ankle that has yet to come to a neutral, natural resting position. These shoes will allow her to more safely and comfortably bear weight through her legs when standing. In the next couple of weeks, we'll be getting a demo standing frame brought in for her to try. It'll be the same kind we have at the apartment, but it will have all the extra support pieces that ours currently lacks. This demo unit and trial run will tell us what Alison will need for our stander when she comes home. It'll also train us on how to safely use it with her. But it seems to have been an alright day though. Thanks for the continued support.

Saturday, November 24, 2012
Alison's word to describe our day was, "happy." : ) We had a really good trip to see her side of the family and friends down in Buffalo, MO. She handled the ride like a champ, and really enjoyed seeing everyone - as they did likewise. A funny story from the day was on our way there this morning. Before we left, I told her I would occasionally ask her how she was doing, and if, for any reason she needed me to pull over for something, I'd be glad to. So we were about an hour outside of Buffalo, and I reached over to grab her hand and asked if she was doing okay. No thumb raise. I asked if I needed to pull over. Thumb up. So I pulled over on the side of the highway and we started spelling so she could tell me what was wrong. S-T-O-P B-I-T - at that point I knew I'd been busted. She was telling me to stop biting my nails. It's long been a bad habit of mine - especially while driving, that she's always got on to me for. Some things never change. : ) I called her a twerp and we kept going - and I stopped biting my nails. By the time we headed home, she was pretty tired and slept a lot of the way. And she was definitely ready to lay down when we got back. It wasn't long before she fell asleep. Piper and I aren't far behind her. But it's been a really good day. Thanks for your continued support.
Friday, November 23, 2012
Alison and I have had an alright day. No crazy shopping experiences here though. She had physical and speech therapies today. The PT was talking about how well she did leaning forward and back - as she has been, but now doing well with the side to side movement too. : ) Otherwise, not much went on today. She got a shower and we laid around watching TV some tonight. Tomorrow is our big road trip to Buffalo, MO. We're pretty excited for it. We plan on leaving about 9am and being back around 6pm. It'll be about six hours total on the road and over nine hours up in the chair. It'll be a stretch, but we think she's up to it. It'll be great to see family. Thanks for your continued support.
Thursday, November 22, 2012
Well Alison and I had a pretty good day today. This morning, we laid around and watched the Macy's parade before going to the movies. Flight was good, but a bit heavier than we expected. But she did well. After that, we came back and Alison laid down to rest for a bit while I grabbed dinner and the slumber party supplies. On my way back, I picked up a piece of pumpkin pie from Perkin's for us to share. It was surprisingly delicious and Alison and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Tonight, we got caught up on watching Parks and Rec. So it wasn't our typical Thanksgiving day, but not much in our lives is as it used to be. It'll be good to see family on Saturday when we go to Buffalo. Tomorrow there's not a whole lot planned - and that's just fine with us. Hope you all had a great Thanksgiving, and thanks for your continued support.
Wednesday, November 21, 2012
Well Alison's had another good day today. When I came at lunch, she was in another PT/OT co-treat session where they were continuing to work on core strength. They, again, were full of compliments about how well she's doing. They were saying they could feel muscles activating all down here spine, so that's good. And during speech therapy, they began oral trials again - today with two bites of thickened apple juice. They had stopped after the aspiration pneumonia from our last hospital visit. But Alison told the therapist about the frosty this weekend - which was supposed to be a secret... But apparently she's coming around - tomorrow she said Alison could have two bites of pumpkin pie! We had a meeting over lunch to discuss discharge plans. Unfortunately we're still in a waiting game with Medicaid. With all the changes going on there, everything's a mess. We'll either get home in the next 2-3 weeks, or it'll be after the first of the year (which we obviously don't want). On a better note, we still don't have a roommate and it sounds like there are quite a few beds opening up in the next few days. Maybe we've dodged a bullet... In the meantime, we're going to have as many slumber party nights as we can - starting tonight. : ) For Thanksgiving day, we're going to the theatre to watch Flight, so that should be fun. And Saturday we're taking a road trip to Buffalo, MO, to spend the day with her family. But all's well. Thanks for the continued support.
Tuesday, November 20, 2012
Well Alison's had a pretty good day today. When I got here at lunch, she was down in therapy with OT and PT. They were having her lean forward, from her chair, onto a table, and bearing weight on her arms, then having her lean back - all while keeping her head controlled and supported. She needed assistance, but she was certainly helping a good deal. The therapists seemed pretty impressed - as was I. Her brother came to visit this evening while I worked late. It's getting pretty busy at work, so it's good I can do that sometimes. But all's well tonight. Thanks for your continued support.
Monday, November 19, 2012
Well Alison was in a really good mood all day long. She was up and at 'em early for her Botox appointment, and that went really well. Afterwards, she was still in a good mood, but opted to lay down and take the day off from most of her therapies. After getting stuck with needles all over her body, I don't blame her. But she did get a bit of PT this afternoon from our friend, Amy. This evening, we just hung out and took it easy. I'm constantly impressed by her in so many ways. Tonight, I was talking about this spot along her hairline that we've been treating with dandruff shampoo for a minor skin condition. But I had long forgotten the name of it. So she proceeded to spell out some crazy word that ended being the name of it. You can imagine my confusion as she's spelling S-E-B-O-R-R... It's seborrhea. I couldn't believe she remembered that. But she's always had a lot better memory than I. But it's been a good day. Thanks for your continued support.
Sunday, November 18, 2012
Well Alison and I have had another good day. We slept in and watched some TV this morning. Tomorrow morning she has a second Botox appointment at 9am. I'm out of PTO at work, so a nurse friend of ours is going to take her. So after lunch today we did a dry run with her loading Alison in the van and driving it across town. It went really well and we feel very comfortable with things. After that, Alison and I just laid around watching TV before taking a nap together. This evening she got a shower and seemed pretty relaxed and sleepy afterwards. But it was a good day and a good weekend. There's a pretty good chance we'll be getting a roommate this week, so we're bracing for that. Thanks for the continued support.
Saturday, November 17, 2012
Alison and I have had a pretty good day together. Weekends are the best. After our slumber party last night, we slept in and watched TV for a while. Then her brother and his wife came by and we all went to a park and walked around for a bit. After that, we drove through Wendy's for a frosty. Then we went through the car wash before coming back. Alison hasn't had a frosty in quite a while. But she handled it very well and ate a lot more than I expected her to. After our last hospital stay, they've been very cautious with food trials, as they don't want to risk aspiration. But I knew she could handle it, and today was proof. I was really happy to see her enjoy one of her favorite treats. Later in the day, one of her friends stopped by that hadn't seen her in a while, so that was really nice. And tonight, we're just catching up on TV shows and cuddling in the bed. But all's well. Thanks for your confined support.
Friday, November 16, 2012
Well Alison's had an alright day today. I was amused over lunch because she and her therapists decided it was time to move away from the thumb for yes/no responses. Rather, she should use her head to nod for yes or shake for no. Her side to side shake for no is pretty good, but the up/down nod for yes is a bit more difficult. So before I went back to work, I tried to reason with her, "I'm just going to run through a few quick questions, so we'll just use your thumb because it's faster, okay?" She shook her head no. It was pretty funny. For now, we agreed to use the thumb up for yes and spelling, and the head shake for no. We'll continue to work on the head nodding. Tonight I found her pretty uncomfortable when I arrived after work. She's been having some pressure in her bladder that's been bothering her. The best they could tell, it might have been a full stomach causing the pressure. Hopefully by morning it'll have passed. And she talked me into having a slumber party weekend, instead of just Saturday. We're taking advantage of not having a roommate yet and having all the sleepovers we can. They tell us the entire building is full - except for the extra bed in her room. But they said we won't get a roommate this weekend, but probably next week. Like I said before, we're really lucky to have had a private room this entire time, so it's hard to complain too much. But all's well tonight. She's resting and me and Piper just settled in for the night too. Thanks for your continued support.
Thursday, November 15, 2012
Well Alison's word for describing her birthday is "special." Her dad, brother, sister in law, aunt and uncle came to visit. And lots of others sent cards, gifts and well wishes her way. We are both very grateful for the love and support from everyone. We didn't do a whole lot tonight. We opened some gifts, read some cards, messages and texts that came in throughout the day (there were a lot). But she had a really good day - did really well in therapy. Her family was pretty impressed by some of her work today. Her head and eye control, and her work on the bike, continue to improve. She should rest well tonight after a full day. Thanks for the continued support.
Wednesday, November 14, 2012
Well Alison's thankfully feeling better today. She told me tonight that she thinks she got sick from paint fumes. They had painted some trim in her room yesterday, so that explains a lot. She's been able to keep everything down since then though. But we did get a bit of not so great news today. We've been fortunate to have a private room for essentially the entire time she's been in a facility (8 months now). But today we were told they have filled every female bed in the facility except the empty one in her double room. So we're apparently going to be getting a roommate - probably tomorrow. Neither of us were very happy upon learning this, but we'll survive. It just makes things like slumber party Saturday nearly impossible. Hopefully we'll be home soon and it'll be a moot point. But for now, it's not much fun to think about. And there's a chance her roommate will be really nice, but there have also been some pretty wild residents come through. So as long as her roommate isn't crazy, we'll be okay. This evening was spent cleaning up so the other half of the room, the closet and the bathroom is free of our stuff. Good times. But Alison's Aunt Sally and Uncle Marty are coming to visit for Alison's birthday tomorrow, so that will be nice. That, paired with some nice cards, flowers and gifts will hopefully offset the stress of a roommate. Thanks for your continued support.
Tuesday, November 13, 2012
Well Alison's had an alright day today. She had a couple decent therapy sessions. She told me there was 20% improvement on her right leg on the bike in PT today. That's pretty impressive. But I was also told she was pretty emotional throughout the afternoon. When I got there tonight, she was sad. We were able to talk through it though, and she was okay. We got a late start to watching the latest episode of Revenge, so we asked they hold her food and meds until about 9 when we'd be finished, and they did. So a little after 9 they came back, and as soon as the food and meds hit her stomach, it came right back up. : ( She hasn't been sick for over a month now, and had been feeling good all day. This came out of nowhere. They took her temp, and it was good. And after she got it out, she said she felt okay. So they're keeping a close eye on her tonight. Please pray this was an isolated incident, and not the first symptom of something worse on its way. Thanks for your continued support.
Monday, November 12, 2012
Well it sounds like Alison's had a decent day. She really only had occupational therapy today, and she did well. She's really doing well with head and eye control. And we have a new case manager handling our efforts to go home, and it really sounds like she's on it. Hopefully we'll be headed that way before long. Tonight we watched Revenge online. We're now only one episode behind. But not a bad day overall. Thanks for your continued support.
Sunday, November 11, 2012
Well Alison and I have had a good and lazy Sunday. We literally laid around all day long. It wasn't until tonight that she got up - and that was just for a shower. But with the weather turning so cold, it was a good day for it. I guess we did have some physical therapy this morning, so it wasn't completely lazy. Thanks for your continued support.
Saturday, November 10, 2012
So Alison and I had a really fun day together. This morning we laid around in bed catching up on one of our TV shows. Then I grabbed some lunch and came back to take her out. We were originally just going to go to our apartment to watch TV, but as we got on the road, we decided to drive around a bit. My original suggestion was that we go get lost downtown. Exploring new places in the city had always been something we enjoyed. So as we were heading north, I remembered a new soda and sandwich shop on the west side that we'd been wanting to go to. On our way there, we noticed an airplane on the top of a building. We tracked that down to find the Roasterie Coffee factory. Then we went and got a blackberry lavender soda from Little Freshie. It was a cool little shop, a delicious drink (which we shared) and we met some nice people. Then we headed to our apartment to watch an episode of our show before heading back to the facility. It was nearly dinner time by then. So I headed out to eat and grab our dog and the slumber party supplies. Tonight we watched The Candidate. It was pretty funny - better than the comedy from last weekend (That's My Boy). But I'm still not sure I'd recommend it to my mother. ; ) But it's been a really fun day. I was glad we could get out again and enjoy the great weather. Thanks for the continued support.
Friday, November 9, 2012
Well Alison and I have had a decent day, and a fun night. She had some good therapy sessions this afternoon. And this evening we went to a friend's surprise birthday party downtown. It was on the rooftop of a fancy loft overlooking the KC skyline. It was fun and beautiful. We met some new friends and had a nice time. We're back now and she's pretty tired. But it was worth the effort. Thanks for your continued support.
Thursday, November 8, 2012
Alison's had an alright day today. When I came over lunch, she was having a good occupational therapy session where they were working on eye control. She also had a good physical therapy session where they continued to build up core strength on the mat. Tonight we've just been lounging around in bed catching up on things. But all's well and we've had an alright day. Thanks for the continued support.
Wednesday, November 7, 2012
Well Alison's had an okay day today. It sounds like she had a couple good therapy sessions, and had a couple good visits from some friends and her brother. I had to work late tonight, so we just took it easy this evening. I went through and caught her up on all the crazy political status' from last night. That was entertaining. But all's well. Thanks for your continued support.
Tuesday, November 6, 2012
Well Alison and I have had a pretty good day today; she had a couple good therapy sessions. In physical therapy, they reported a 10% increase in her left leg performance on the bike. : ) This evening we just laid around in bed watching the election results come in. Alison voted in advance, and I casted mine this morning. Alison was pretty excited when I brought in a "I voted" sticker for her over lunch. There's not much she can do. So voting was especially important to her this time around. But all's well. Thanks for your continued support.
Monday, November 5, 2012
Well Alison has been a pretty sleepy girl today. At lunch her belly was hurting from where they replaced the feeding tube on Friday, so she asked for some meds that added to the sleepiness. But she did have some therapy today, and her dad came to visit. So I wouldn't call it a bad day. I got here a little after six, and she's been snoozing good the whole time. I'll probably head out in a bit and do some snoozing of my own. Thanks for the continued support.
Sunday, November 4, 2012
Well Alison and I have had a very relaxing day. Our slumber party was nice, and we lounged around in bed until after lunch today. And then, we only got up because a couple friends stopped by. But it was good to see them, and it was right back to bed afterwards. So lots of rest, lots of cuddling, lots of bad TV watching. No complaints. Some of you have asked about the status of her coming home. I wish I had better news to report, but it is still very much a waiting game. There are so many steps in the process - and each one takes time. And the last step was done incorrectly, so now we have to wait for it to happen all over again. Then there are still a couple more steps before we're ready. Needless to say, we're pretty frustrated. We'll get home when we get home. But I'm tired of getting my (and others') hopes up only to be let down. But we're not necessarily in a bad place right now. We're just ready to move on to the next step. Thanks for your continued support.
Saturday, November 3, 2012
Well we've had a pretty good day today. Alison's aunts were back this morning, and her cousin stopped by for a while today too. We had a nice time chatting and catching up with all of them. For slumber party Saturday, we watched a movie that wasn't all that great - That's My Boy with Adam Sandler a Andy Samberg. It was good for a couple laughs, but I wouldn't necessarily recommend it. But we're all in bed now and are looking forward to an extra hour of sleep tonight. Thanks for your continued support.
Friday, November 2, 2012
Well Alison's had an alright day today. Her appointment this morning went pretty good. Afterwards she wasn't in much of a mood for therapy so she just rested. They replaced both her catheter and her feeding tube. But it went well. This afternoon two of her aunts came for a visit. That was nice, and they'll be back in the morning. This evening we've just been taking it easy. No real big plans for the weekend. Thanks for your continued support.
Thursday, November 1, 2012
Well Alison's had an alright day. I didn't hear a whole lot about therapy, but she did get to hang out with her brother and his wife this afternoon. When I arrived this evening, she was just about to get a shower. That's always nice. Afterwards, they were getting her dried off and dressed when, while rolling her over, her feeding tube got pulled out. It was a little shocking, but not painful, and not an emergency situation. Fortunately, we have an appointment in the morning to check up on her still fairly new supra pubic catheter. So they should be able to reinsert it there. But otherwise, it's been a decent day. Thanks for your continued support.
Wednesday, October 31, 2012
Well Alison's had a really good day today. She had a few good therapy sessions, followed by a really fun evening with friends handing out candy to trick or treaters at their house. It was great to get out and enjoy some good company. We both had a really good time. Thanks for the continued support.
Tuesday, October 30, 2012
Monday, October 29, 2012
So Alison's had a pretty good day today. When I asked her to rate it on a scale of 1-10, she gave it an 8. : ) Her therapy sessions went well, and she's been in good spirits. Tonight wasn't too productive - just hanging out. But that's just fine. We're still trying to make progress on coming home. But Medicaid is in transition right now and everything is moving so slowly. But we are very ready to be home. If you're the praying type, please pray that things would align for her to come home ASAP. Thanks for your continued support.
Sunday, October 28, 2012
So Alison and I have had a pretty good day today. We didn't do anything overly exciting. Last night's slumber party was good. And we just hung out and watched tv most of the day. She got a nap this afternoon and a shower this evening, so that's always nice. Thanks for the continued support.
Saturday, October 27, 2012
Well Alison and I have had a pretty nice Saturday together. This morning was pretty unproductive. We hung out in bed for a while, then a friend came over and painted her toe nails and hung out for a bit. Then after lunch, we loaded up in the van and went over to our apartment for a bit. Last time she was there she'd just gotten out of the hospital and wasn't feeling so hot. Much better this time. She even helped me decide what things should go into storage. "That dang chair." is one of a few things that will be going. : ) When we got back, Alison had a make-up physical therapy session from one she missed earlier in the week. It went alright. This evening was nice and relaxing. For slumber party Saturday, we continued getting caught on one of our tv shows. But it's been a good day. Thanks for the continued support.
Friday, October 26, 2012
Well Alison's had a pretty good day today. She's been in pretty good spirits and had some good therapy sessions. This evening we've been lounging around watching TV. It's been a nice relaxing evening though. We don't have any real big plans for the weekend, and that's okay. Thanks for your continued support.
Thursday, October 25, 2012
Well Alison's had an alright day. We got a bit of a surprise visit from her dad and stepmom, and that was really nice. She had a couple good therapy sessions today and a relaxing shower this evening. We're still working on getting her home. The process seems to be inching along, but we're getting there. Thanks for your continued support.
Wednesday, October 24, 2012
Well Alison's had a pretty good day today. She had some good therapy sessions and has been in pretty good spirits. She had a visit from some girl friends this evening, and her brother and his wife came by earlier today. But all's well. Thanks for your continued support.
Tuesday, October 23, 2012
Well Alison worked hard in therapy today. Over lunch, I was able to be there for physical therapy where she did 15 minutes on the recumbent bike. The bike does assist some. But at the end it shows an activity log showing how much work was done by Alison versus the machine. Alison was doing 52% of the work. Not too shabby. So this evening she's pretty tired and we're just taking it easy. They said they'll be doing the bike three times a week. Good stuff. Thanks for your continued support.
Monday, October 22, 2012
Well Alison seems to have had an alright day today. She had some good therapy sessions and has been in good spirits. We were originally hoping Alison would come home by the end of September. When that came and went, I set a new goal for her to come home by today, 10/22. Well, that's not happening either. We still have everything in the works, but there are a lot of things that have to come together first. We're progressing, and I'm hopeful it will be very soon - maybe the next 2 weeks. We have a meeting tomorrow to discuss some things about our coming transition home. So it's in the works. And our apartment and care team are ready and waiting. Thanks for your continued support.
Sunday, October 21, 2012
Well it's been another good day for Alison and I, and a really good weekend as a whole. This morning we didn't do a whole lot - just laid around until it was time to get up and around for church (around 3pm, lol). But church this evening was great. It was so good to be back and Alison was welcomed with lots of love and warm, familiar faces. It got a little emotional a couple times, but nothing too crazy. And we had lots of good laughs too. : ) But I'd like to thank everyone that was there tonight to make it so special. We went for so long not having a church home before coming to KC. And I can't imagine going through this without our Redeemer fam. Thanks for all of your continued support.
Saturday, October 20, 2012
Well Alison and I have had a really nice day together. We got up this morning and headed across town to see our friend run in the KC marathon. We were out and about for over 2 hours and Alison did fantastic (so did our friend). Then this afternoon a friend came by and painted her nails while I got some lunch. This evening we watched the Avengers for our slumber party Saturday movie. It was good, and the two girls (Alison and Piper) are already sleeping. But it's been a good day, and we're hopeful tomorrow will be even better. We're planning on trying to go to church together tomorrow afternoon. It'll be the first time back (for her) since all this happened. But she says she's up for it, so we'll probably give it a go! It's exciting and nerve-racking at the same time. I'll let you know how it goes. Thanks for your continued support.
Friday, October 19, 2012
Well Alison's had another good day. She continues to show improvement in therapy. And tomorrow morning we're planning on getting up and going to cheer on our friend, Holli, who's running in the KC marathon. That should be fun. But it's been a good day and evening and we're looking forward to a fun weekend. Thanks for your continued support.
Thursday, October 18, 2012
Well Alison's had a pretty good day today. In therapy she told me she got to "ride the bike." They have a recumbent bike down there, so I guess that's what they did. But I could see how that could work. She's always had pretty good movement in her left leg, but she's beginning to get some better movement in her right leg too. So I'm looking forward to hearing more about it tomorrow. But it sounds exciting! Otherwise, she said she had a good day. And this evening a few girl friends stopped in for a visit and had a nice time. So not a bad day. Thanks for your continued support.
Wednesday, October 17, 2012
So Alison had a pretty good day today. She was in good spirits from start to finish. The appointment with the eye doc went well. Nothing huge was unearthed. But we did verify that she doesn't have double vision, but things at a distance are blurry. Her eyes weren't as relaxed as they can be, but the doc saw some good responses to queues he was giving. He thinks there's a lot of potential for improvement and sent us away with some simple eye exercises. After work, I discovered she'd had another really good speech therapy session. This time the therapist said she was making all kinds of good vocal sounds for her. And this evening a friend stopped by to hang with Alison while I had an event for work to attend. It sounds like they had a really nice time together too. So, all in all, it's been a good day. Thanks for your continued support.
Tuesday, October 16, 2012
Well it seems as if Alison's had a pretty decent day today. This morning we needed to address the non-draining catheter issue. Fortunately, they were able to replace it here at the facility. The other option was to send her out to the hospital to have it done. So that was a relief. And I arrived this evening to find her sleeping hard! I can usually stir her pretty easily by talking - but not right now! I can't bring myself to wake her though - especially when she's sleeping so well. But a note from the speech therapist said she had a good session this afternoon. It's funny, Alison spelled out for me this morning, "I don't think Janna (ST) realizes how much of a morning person I'm not." The next thing you know she was here for therapy! So we asked if she could come back after lunch, and she did, and they had a good session! Tomorrow we have an appointment with a neuro-optometrist that specializes in cases like ours. Alison's excited about the possibility. She can see, but she doesn't have complete control over her eyes and has a hard time focusing. We saw a similar doc when in Lincoln, but at that point she had virtually no control and it wasn't much help. She's improved quite a bit since then, so hopefully we'll get some help. Well, I suppose I'll sit here and stare at this pretty girl sleep for a while. (Creepy?) I wonder at what point should I wake her, or just let her sleep all night? We'll see... Thanks for the continued support.
Monday, October 15, 2012
Well it's been a pretty good day for Alison today. Her chest X-ray came back free of pneumonia, so that's good news! And she did better in her therapy sessions today too. This evening we're trying to figure out an issue with her catheter - it doesn't seem to be draining properly. It's not urgent at the moment, but we're keeping a close eye on it. We'll address it properly in the morning, but there's no sense it running to the ER at this point - and hopefully tomorrow we can stay away too. So hopefully all will go well there. But she was comfortable when I left, and they're keeping a close eye on her overnight. She said i shouldn't worry...so I'll try not too. Thanks for your continued support.
Sunday, October 14, 2012
Well it's been a pretty fun, fall day for Alison and I. This morning we took it pretty easy after our slumber party. And after lunch we went over to Shawnee Mission park with our friends Jonny and Amy. We had a really nice time walking along the lake, watching some sail boats, some ducks and enjoying the pretty trees. It was a bit breezy, but an overall nice fall day and Alison really enjoyed the outing. : ) It's so good that she's feeling better and we're able to do fun stuff like that every now and then. This afternoon she got a shower and a nap. And this evening we watched a few episodes of one of our tv shows, Revenge. Tomorrow morning she's slated for a follow-up lung X-ray to check the pneumonia situation. We're optimistic it'll show improvement. Thanks for your continued support.
Saturday, October 13, 2012
Well Alison and I have had a pretty good day together. We hung out by the open window this morning and listened to it rain and admired the colorful trees. That was pretty relaxing. Around lunch time, a friend stopped by and hung with Alison for a bit while I grabbed a bite to eat. Afterwards we hung out for a bit more before it was afternoon nap time. Since I'm not much of a napper, I went shopping for Alison. She's needing some cooler weather outfits and I know how much she loves wearing sweaters this time of hear, so I went to Target and picked up a few things. She's already asleep this evening, so we'll see what she thinks in the morning. Our plan for tomorrow is to take a ride in our van over to Shawnee Mission park to look at the trees. We're both looking forward to that. Until then, me, Alison and Piper are about to call it a night. Thanks for the continued support.
Friday, October 12, 2012
Tonight, our update is a funny story, accompanied by a picture. Yesterday, Alison tried telling me about a student that came in and said something about a beautiful daughter. I assumed she was talking to Alison's dad who was here yesterday morning. So no big deal. Alison's beautiful. Got it. This morning, first thing she tells me is that the student wasn't talking to her dad! The student saw pictures of cute little girl, Alison, and thought she was her daughter! We were cracking up at the story. She had me put a note on the wall above the pictures reading, "This is me and my brother as little kids." So tonight, she said, "Relative to yesterday, the student said she has her mom's hair." You can tell from the picture they certainly have the same hair. Lol. Good times, funny stories. : ) Otherwise, all's well. She's getting back into therapy and building up her strength again, and feeling a little better every day. We're hoping to maybe go for a ride in the van sometime this weekend if the weather cooperates. Thanks for your continued support.
Thursday, October 11, 2012
Well Alison has begun to slowly get back into therapy. She had a session of speech and occupational therapy and it went alright. She has a lot of ground to make up from being sick, but we'll get it going again. Alison's dad headed back today. But she's had an alright day. Thanks for your continued support.
Wednesday, October 10, 2012
Well Alison's had an alright day today. She didn't get into therapy, but she said tomorrow she's going to give it a shot. But she's doing a little better each day. So we're slowly, but surely, getting back on the recovery wagon. Thanks for your continued support.
Tuesday, October 9, 2012
Slowly but surely Alison seems to be rebounding from her 2 week stay in the hospital. Today she opted to get dressed and up in her chair for a while. She tolerated it well for 3-4 hours. Maybe tomorrow she'll be up for starting back into a little therapy. And her cough seems to be getting a little better too. Her dad got here this morning and will stay for a couple days. Overall, all is well. Alison's already snoozing so I'll bet she sleeps good tonight. Thanks for your continued support.
Monday, October 8, 2012
So it seems like Alison's had an alright day today. She's still coughing and feeling pretty crummy, but overall, she says she's feeling better. She decided to stay in bed today - and that's just fine. She did say she might be up for getting up and around tomorrow, so we'll see. Thanks for your continued support.
Sunday, October 7, 2012
So we got back to the facility yesterday afternoon, Alison got a shower, and was snoozing hard by 7:30pm. Around 4:30am, they had just fed her, were getting her repositioned and she threw up all the food they just gave her. We got her cleaned up and she did it again. And during all of that her temperature went up a little. So we were bracing for possibly having to go right back to the hospital. But she ended up not getting sick again, and her temp came down. They gave her some nausea meds and she was feeling quite a bit better. So crisis averted. Since then she's been coughing here and there, but that's all. And they've been able to slowly resume feeding. On a scale of 1 to 10, she says she feels like a 5. So we still have room to improve. As we start a new week, I'm guessing we'll not be rushing right back into therapy. She wasn't real eager to get up and around today - as you might expect. My mom spent the morning with her before heading home around noon. And her brother spent the afternoon with her while I went to my first Chiefs game. They lost - as expected, but I had a good time with a couple friends. The official countdown for home is on though. I'm planning on her first official full day at home will be on or around Monday, 10/22. Lets hope we can make that happen. Thanks for your continued support.
Saturday, October 6, 2012
Well we finally are out of the hospital! Late this afternoon we were discharged back to the skilled nursing facility. When Alison got secured into our new van for their maiden voyage, she had a pretty big smile on her face. I guess that means she approves. On our way back to the facility, we made a pit stop by our apartment so Alison could check it out in person. It seems like she approved of it too. When we got back to the facility they got her a shower almost right away - that always feels nice. Then she laid down and right now is sleeping soundly. I'll stay with her again tonight - it is slumber party Saturday after all. This time it's more slumber than party, but that's fine. This morning I went with a friend over to Topeka and picked up the standing frame. It seems to work just fine, so hopefully we'll make good use of it. : ) But it's good to be out if the hospital and back somewhere familiar. We were welcomed back by some of our favorites at the facility, so that was comforting. Thanks for the continued support.
Friday, October 5, 2012
So we didn't get out of the hospital today as we were hoping to. The doc wants one more day of stability before discharging. So we're back to planning for a discharge tomorrow. She still has quite the cough, but that's to be expected though. My mom got to town this afternoon so that's been good. Tomorrow I'm going to Topeka to get a therapeutic standing frame for our apartment. We were considering buying one ourselves because the facility where she is doesn't have one and we're about to that stage in her recovery. So we got wind of one in Topeka for free! It will allow Alison to load bear through her legs and begin building muscle tone that will hopefully assist with walking again down the road. And we're in the home stretch for actually coming home too. We received word that we're close to taking delivery on some of our equipment for home today as well. Hopefully we're about a week or two from having that ready. So things are progressing. The down side is that Alison hasn't had any therapy for two weeks, so we'll have some ground to make up there. But thanks for all of your continued prayers and support.
Thursday, October 4, 2012
Well Alison's feeling somewhat better today. Her cough persists though and is still very uncomfortable. But her fever has stayed away. She's still on meds and there's still some fluid in her lungs. But they're saying we should be able to discharge back to the facility tomorrow afternoon as long as the fever stays away. As far as the cough goes, they say it could linger for up to month. That's going to be terrible if that's the case. If you guys could pray specifically for the cough to clear soon, that would provide tremendous relief. As it is, it's really bad and makes resting especially difficult. Thanks for your continued support.
Wednesday, October 3, 2012
Well it seems like Alison might finally be starting to feel better. Her fever hasn't spike recently and her cough is improving. They're taking another lung X-ray in the morning, but if all goes well, I'd expect they might let us leave the hospital on Thursday. Keep your fingers crossed. I have the van with her pink wheelchair in it ready to go when they say the word. Aunt Sally will be here tomorrow with her during the day so that should be nice. Alison had a nice visit tonight from a couple friends and is sleeping soundly now. I'll be hopefully doing the same soon. Thanks for the continued support.
Tuesday, October 2, 2012
Well we're still in the hospital. Alison's had a fever again today so they started her on some new antibiotics. Her lungs still have some fluid in them, so it could be some slight pneumonia too. But they're continuing with the breathing treatments and it seems to be helping. We've had a decent evening together though. She didn't require extra meds so we were able to "talk" a bit and that was nice. She's already resting well this evening and hopefully gets a full night of sleep. I'd guess if all goes well we might get to leave on Thursday. But we'll see. Thanks for your continued support.
Monday, October 1, 2012
After a successful procedure early this afternoon, Alison has been resting most of the rest of the day. She's still receiving breathing treatments and coughing some in between, but it seems like it might be getting better. I'm hopeful we'll be heading home tomorrow or Wednesday. While she sleeps, I'm thoroughly enjoying watching the Bears beat the Cowboys. That doesn't happen very often so I have to enjoy it when it does. Thanks for your continued support.
Just so everyone knows, Alison's procedure is finished and went really well. She even gave me a big smile right afterward (good drugs). But she's resting well and prob will for a while. I'm going to go pick up our van this afternoon. Never thought I'd be so excited about buying a minivan. : )
Sunday, September 30, 2012
Hmm... Where to begin? At this very moment, Alison is resting quite peacefully and has been for the last three hours. Let's hope it lasts through the night. It's been an ok day. She's still coughing a lot and they're doing breathing treatments four times a day. They found a bit of pre-pneumonia on an X-ray of her lungs this morning. And her white cell count came up again (sign of infection) so they started her back on an antibiotic. Tomorrow we're planning on having the procedure for the new, less infection-prone catheter to be put in. They don't have to put her under for this procedure, but they will take her to surgery for it. If all goes well, maybe we'll get to go home on Tuesday. Let's hope so at least. Thanks for your continued support.

Well it's been a pretty up and down day for Alison. Our morning was ok and we went down to surgery and were awaiting our procedure to help with her stomach issues when they came in and changed their minds and said they weren't doing it. With the aspiration pneumonia, pneumothorax and excessive coughing, the anesthesia doc didn't want to risk putting her under and then having trouble getting her off the breathing tube. And since it wasn't an emergency, he wanted to see a current x-ray of her lungs to make sure everything looked okay. So the plan was to try again tomorrow. Alison wasn't too happy about that and told me she just wanted to go home. I don't blame her. So we went back up to our room and had a couple x-rays of her lungs and abdomen. Then a bunch of Alison's girlfriends from out of town came in for a visit. By this time Alison had settled back down a bit and was happy to see them. I went off to play with the boys while the girls hung out. We all had a good time. When I came back, the x-ray results were in. Turns out that not only do the lungs look okay, but her abdomen looks a lot better too. So there's no need for the procedure after all! So that's great news. But we'll likely be here until Monday or Tuesday though. We're going to get a different type of catheter that should be less prone to chronic UTIs - which we desperately need. This evening was going good until a really bad coughing fit threw things off. It was really bad and there were a couple times she was choking and turning blue in the face. She got a lot of phlegm up - some of which had some blood in it. But they gave her a breathing treatment and some meds and she's finally calming down some. Hopefully that spell is over and a full night of rest is ahead. Thanks for your continued support.

Well Alison's had an okay day. She had a follow up CT scan of her abdomen to see if the issues she's been having were clearing up - as they hoped they were. But unfortunately they haven't. So tomorrow they're going to perform a non-surgical procedure to help. It's supposed to be quick, painless and provide some much needed relief. I'll spare you the details, but it's better than surgery. Otherwise, physically, she's doing okay. But, emotionally, she's having a hard time. And because her body is so exhausted from everything, her toe isn't able to help us communicate as effectively as we can otherwise. But she's already asleep now and will hopefully rest well all night. We're expecting a group of friends to visit tomorrow. This visit has been planned for a while. And in light of everything that's gone on, Alison insisted they still come. I'm sure we'll all have a nice time. Oh, and we bought a wheelchair van today. We'll actually get it on Monday, but everything's ready to go. It wasn't a small purchase, but it's a large step toward Alison and I living independently together again. I'll be looking forward to taking her for a spin in it next week. : ) And it will be essential as we'll need to get her from our apartment to day rehab, doctor's appointments, etc. Thanks for your continued support.

Alison seems to be feeling quite a bit better this evening. Her stomach isn't bothering her as much and that equals a much more relaxed girl. I'm anticipating some decent rest tonight for the both of us. But she's been pretty relaxed and alert thus far this evening, and with the help of some meds, I'm thinking she'll rest we'll tonight. I feel like I've said this a lot lately, but hopefully we're on the mend and on our way out of the hospital in the next couple days. Thanks for your continued support.
Wednesday, September 26, 2012
Well, I'm cautiously optimistic to report that Alison seems to finally be showing signs of improvement. We moved out of ICU this evening and she's been a lot less spasmatic - a clear indication of her comfort level being better. She's still having some stomach issues - which they think caused the initial vomiting. Then from the vomiting it's likely some fluid got into her lungs causing aspiration pneumonia - which explains the fever. So the meds she was on when we thought it was a UTI that had gone septic will still treat the pneumonia too. So she's been able to get some rest last night, and some today. I'll be with her overnight, and she's sleeping right now. I'm hopeful we'll both get some good rest. Thanks again for all of your support. Hopefully in the next 2-3 days we can get out of the hospital and back on track.
Tuesday, September 25, 2012
Well I wish I had better news to report, but Alison's still in ICU struggling to rest and be comfortable. The fevers creep back from time to time and her stomach continues to cramp - causing her to tense up and spasm pretty regularly. They have found some bacteria in her lab cultures so they should soon be able to specifically target the infection. There are brief moments where the spasms subside and she can rest, but they're far too few. I wouldn't be surprised if after all of this she sleeps for three straight days. Her dad and step mom are staying overnight with her before heading home in the morning. Thanks for the continued support.
Monday, September 24, 2012
At this very moment, Alison is resting peacefully. I'm settling in to stay the night with her in ICU on the make-shift bed. She was doing pretty good all afternoon, but she had a brief episode this evening where her spasms kicked in pretty bad and her heart rate and temperature went up with it. But she's settled down now and will hopefully get some solid rest tonight. She has a follow up chest X-ray at 4am. Convenient. But we're hoping everything looks good there. But we're still pretty up and down. I'd guess if all stays calm there's a chance we could be moved out of ICU tomorrow, but we'll see. Thanks for everyone's kind words, thoughts and prayers on our behalf.
Sunday, September 23, 2012
Well Alison's had a pretty miserable day to be honest. We've decided the bacteria from a UTI has most likely entered her bloodstream, or become septic. They're moving her to ICU tonight after many failed attempts at making her comfortable. She's had a fever the entire time too that Tylenol isn't helping much. They have her on a cocktail of antibiotics that should hopefully address the bacteria, but we won't be able to focus in until lab results come back in another day or two. She's not vomiting or coughing like she had been, so that's good. But her spasms are pretty severe - making it impossible for her to rest. Her brother and his wife are staying with her overnight while I try to get some sleep. She's been fighting this bug nonstop since last night, so I pray she's able to rest some too. I can only hope to find her resting peacefully in the morning. Thanks for your continued positive thoughts and prayers.
Well Alison and I ended up at the hospital. She started vomiting blood and had a low fever so we didn't want to take any chances. We've been in the ER since 1:30am and are waiting for a room to open up. She's still feeling pretty crappy. They're still not sure what's causing all of this, but they have her on meds and fluids and have sent off blood for lab work. Hopefully, whatever it is clears up soon.
Saturday, September 22, 2012
Alison and I have had an alright day. Earlier we hung outside for a bit then watched some tv before resting this afternoon. This evening we watched a chick flick for slumber party Saturday. As we were winding down for the evening Alison's stomach starting hurting and she's gotten sick a couple times tonight. We can't decide if it's symptomatic of a UTI or if it's just standard stomach sickness that's been going around. She'd been on an antibiotic to treat a bit of bacteria that showed up on a UA last week, so they went ahead and switched it up in case it wasn't effective and this is UTI related. Whatever it is, I hope it's short-lived and she's able to sleep tonight. Thanks for your continued support.
Friday, September 21, 2012
Alison has had a good day today. Her aunt and uncle came in for a visit and had a nice time. And she did well in her therapies and is beginning to show some impressive strength in her head/neck. She's not holding her head up completely on her own, but she is beginning to look back and forth and up and down. : ) But she was in good spirits today and we are looking forward to hanging out a lot this weekend. Thanks for your continued support.
Thursday, September 20, 2012
Well Alison's had an alright day today. She was still pretty sleepy but in a decent mood. Tonight we watched some tv and hung out before she had a shower. I'll go back to help her get ready for bed in a bit. I looked at a wheelchair accessible mini van this afternoon. We'll be needing to purchase one by the time she comes home - hopefully in the next few weeks. But all's well. Thanks for your continued support.
Wednesday, September 19, 2012
Well Alison didn't sleep very well last night and was pretty sleepy most of the day. She wasn't necessarily in a bad mood, just kind of out of it. A few of her friends stopped by for some girl time tonight. Meanwhile, I hung out with some guys and watched The Expendables at our apartment. Afterwards, Alison looked pretty cozy and ready to sleep well before I left tonight. I hope I find her well rested in the morning. Thanks for the continued support.
Tuesday, September 18, 2012
Alison and I have had a good day today. She did well in therapy and was in pretty good spirits. We enjoyed some chocolate ice cream this evening. And she asked that we begin tapering down her muscle relaxer she's been on for so long. She thinks she might be able to eventually do without it altogether. The Botox, paired with her ability to tell us when she's not feeling well, keeps her muscle spasms pretty much in check. Hopefully that'll go well and she'll be on one less medication. Thanks for your continued support.
Monday, September 17, 2012
Well Alison's had a good day today. She did really well in therapy today. She showed she was able to hold her left leg up, while laying on her back, for about 10 seconds. That's pretty impressive leg strength! And she also showed improved head/neck control by being able to clearly look to the far left and bring her head back to center. And her left hand movement is improving too. We've started having thumb wars and it seems she gets stronger every day. And tonight a couple of guy friends stopped by to provide some good comic relief for us. So overall it's been a good day. Thanks for your continued support.
Sunday, September 16, 2012
Alison and I have had a nice, relaxing Sunday together. We slept in this morning and weren't real productive throughout today. We watched a couple of our shows, she got a nap this afternoon, we hung out outside some, so it was pretty laid back. Now to switch gears for a busy work week. Thanks for your continued support.
Saturday, September 15, 2012
Alison and I have had a good day today. This morning some friends stopped by to help with some physical therapy while I ran some errands. Then we went for a walk around the block with the new chair, and it did really well. And the weather was perfect. This afternoon, Alison had a shower and rested a bit before Piper and I returned for our slumber party. Alison's been pretty sleepy this evening, but we've had a nice time. Thanks for your continued support.
Friday, September 14, 2012
Alison's had a pretty good day today. Her pink wheelchair came in and it seems like she really likes it. Not only does it seem more comfortable for her, it's also easier for me to maneuver. So I think it's a win-win situation. : ) And she had good therapy sessions today too. This evening we went outside for a bit, then watched a few episodes of one of our favorite sitcoms (Community). On the home front, they finished the roll in shower at our apartment today too. So it's been a pretty good day. Thanks for the continued support.
Thursday, September 13, 2012
Well Alison's had an alright day today. We had a good follow up appt with the Botox doc this morning. Then she had a couple good therapy sessions. But it seems like she was a bit more emotional than usual this afternoon. A friend stopped by, and later her brother, and they both said she was kinda sad today. Tonight she's had a shower and is feeling much better. I told her tomorrow the sun will come up on a new day. But as of now, all is well. The pink wheelchair is scheduled to arrive tomorrow at 11:30am, so hopefully that happens as planned. Thanks for your continued support.
Wednesday, September 12, 2012
Well Alison's had another good day today. She had a good day of therapy and enjoyed hanging out with her dad and step mom before they hit the road back home this afternoon. She also got her teeth cleaned and examined today. All went well there. Then a couple friends stopped by for a visit this evening. And our apartment complex began installing a roll in shower in our unit so when Alison comes home she can have a shower. : ) So it's been a busy but good day. Thanks for your continued support.
Tuesday, September 11, 2012
It sounds like Alison had a good day today, but she is one tired girl tonight! She's working on a three hour nap right now with no signs of letting up! But she worked hard in therapy today and deserves some rest. Her dad and his wife came to town this morning and they all had a nice day together. And it sounds like the wheelchair delivery is delayed some more. Sorry to get everyone's hopes up prematurely. It's looking like early next week now. Tomorrow after work, Alison's dental hygienist friend, Megan, is coming by with her dentist/boss for a teeth cleaning and exam. That should be good just to make sure everything is up to par in there. But I'm going to continue to let her rest tonight. At some point I'll need to decide when to call it a night if there's no signs of waking. : ) Thanks for your continued support.
Monday, September 10, 2012
Well the big disappointing news today is that Alison's pink wheelchair didn't make it in today as we were expecting. : ( It was ordered from a place in Lincoln when we were there, and the guy who was going to deliver it today threw his back out this weekend. So the new delivery date is this Friday. But otherwise Alison had a good day. She continues to stay busy with therapies and showing improvement. This evening, per her request, I brought in some puréed Lucky Charms cereal and milk for her - which she thoroughly enjoyed a few bites of. And we had a nice visit from our friend, Holli, too. Tomorrow her dad and step mom are coming up to visit for a couple days. Thanks for the continued support.
Sunday, September 9, 2012
Alison and I have had a good day today. We slept well last night, watched the Bears win this afternoon, and enjoyed a nice evening outside tonight. It's been pretty uneventful, but relaxing. Her wheelchair comes in tomorrow, so that'll be fun. But all is well. Thanks for your continued support.
Saturday, September 8, 2012
Alison and I have had a good Saturday. This morning I went over and checked in to make sure she'd had a good night and that she was doing well this morning. After that, she turned me loose to get some stuff done at the apartment. I went shopping for closet organizing supplies and got one of three shelves put together. Then I went back around 11am to hang out for a bit. We had a fun visit from 7 of Alison's former coworkers at The Kitchen Clinic in Springfield. It was great to see some familiar faces and catch up. I know Alison really enjoyed it - so thanks for coming up, everyone. : ) Later this afternoon, I was able to get another shelf put together at the apartment while Alison got a shower and a nap. After sitting outside for a bit, we watched a few more of our NBC sitcoms tonight during slumber party Saturday. Currently, she and the pup are already snoozing, and I'll be there shortly. Overall, it's been a good day. Thanks for your continued support.
Friday, September 7, 2012
Alison had another good day today. She had some good therapies during the day, and this evening we watched a couple episodes of Parks and Rec. And we are now officially Medicaid approved! We thought we were earlier, but now we are for sure. So the push to get Alison home is on! : ) I have to get our apartment all ready for her to come home - hopefully by the end of this month. But that's really excited and we are both looking forward to it. Thanks for your continued support.

Wednesday, September 5, 2012
Alison's has a pretty good day today. We've been fighting off the UTI successfully so far. They started her on a new antibiotic today to keep it at bay. But so far, so good. She's been feeling well and in good spirits most of the day so that always help. And there were good notes from the therapists today too. So not a bad day. Thanks for the continued support.
Tuesday, September 4, 2012
Today's been a better day for Alison than yesterday. Last night was pretty rough, but she was able to get some relief from the bladder spasms and get some rest. And today she was in a really good mood most of the day and had a really good PT/OT co-treat session where she's continuing to show improvement in trunk and head control. They worked on sitting at the edge of the mat and leaning in all directions. They also worked on rolling from her back to her side. The therapists seem continually impressed by her progress each day and that keeps us hopeful it'll only continue. This afternoon we met with our case manager that will help us as we begin making plans to go home. Our goal has been the end of September, but that would be the best case scenario. It's probably not going to be that soon, but hopefully not long after. Thanks for your continued support.
Monday, September 3, 2012
Alison and I have had an alright day. Despite the holiday, she had a morning full of therapy which I was glad to accompany her to. And this afternoon we relaxed and started trying to get caught up on an ABC show called Revenge that we'd fallen behind on. This evening wasn't much fun though. This morning she'd mentioned having some painful bladder spasms from a possible UTI, so we got some meds ordered. But with the holiday, they didn't make it in by this evening. So tonight she was in some pretty intense pain from the spasms. We eventually got them under control just before I left and she was resting comfortably. I just hope she stays that way throughout the night and that another UTI isn't trying to come back. We'll be monitoring her temperature and they're sending off a UA tomorrow. We'd appreciate any prayers and positive thoughts for a good night's rest and that the UTIs would stay away. Thanks for your continued support.
Sunday, September 2, 2012
Alison and I have had a pretty good day today. We started the morning by sitting outside and listening to some music before it got too warm. While outside, she showed me some more new movement in her right leg. I had noticed it sticking straight out when she was laughing. Then she would gradually relax it back down. So when I asked her if she could straighten it back out by herself she did! For her right leg - that's great movement. So we need to work on getting on her right foot straightened out so we can begin load-bearing through her legs and hopefully standing soon. We also had a visit from a good friend this afternoon, and then took a little bit of a nap. So it's a decent day. Thanks for the continued support.
Saturday, September 1, 2012
Alison and I have had a pretty good day today. This morning was fairly uneventful and this afternoon I trimmed her nails before she had a shower. Then we took a nap together until it was time for me to grab some dinner. After that I returned with our pup and our slumber party supplies. We watched the newest Sherlock Holmes movie and ate some junk food. The nurse brought in a cupcake and Alison enjoyed the icing while I ate the cake. It's been a decent day though. Thanks for your continued support.
Friday, August 31, 2012
Well Alison seems to have had a better day today than yesterday. I think her therapy sessions went well and she had a couple nice visits from friends. This evening we finally got caught up on Downton Abbey. We're looking forward to the long weekend with not a lot planned. Thanks for your continued support.
Thursday, August 30, 2012
Well Alison's not had the best day ever. She had a couple rough therapy sessions where she wasn't quite able to do the things they were asking of her. And that just kind of snowballed into the rest of the day being a bit off. But these days are going to happen, and she's still been doing really well - especially in the last week or two. So this is just a minor set back and hopefully we'll get back on board tomorrow. Thanks for the continued support.
Wednesday, August 29, 2012
Alison's had another pretty good day. The physical therapist reported that Alison continues to improve in core strength and is able to roll her body from her back to her side almost entirely on her own. She also showed good head/neck control with the occupational therapist. Her dad got into town today for a quick visit but heads back to Buffalo, MO, tomorrow. Overall, it's been a good day though. Oh, and we officially closed on our house today. It was delayed a few days, but it wasn't a big deal. Just one more thing out of the way. Thanks for the continued support.
Tuesday, August 28, 2012
Well Alison has had a pretty good day today. We celebrated eight years of marriage today with eight hot pink roses (same as our wedding) some nice cards and some really good cuddle time tonight. All things considered, it's been a great day. She had a full day of therapy and our pastors stopped by for a visit this afternoon. We've been pretty excited the past couple weeks because Alison really has begun to show a good amount of new movement. Not only does she still have really good movement in her left leg/foot, she's recently shown signs of life in her right foot, left hand, left shoulder and head/neck muscles. Now most of these are subtle, but they're not involuntary and they weren't happening before. All that said, we're pretty excited about what's to come. Thanks for following along, praying and supporting us in so many ways.
Monday, August 27, 2012
Well Alison had a good day today. It was her first day of increased therapy. She had sessions of speech, physical and occupational therapies plus a visit from our PT friend for range-of-motion exercises. And she hung out with her brother and his wife for most of the day. Then this evening she had a nice reunion with one of her best friends who hadn't been able to visit until now. Before bed, Alison told me she needed razors. So we're back to her making the lists and me going to the store. But it was a busy but good day today. She continues to show little bits of movement in a few new places. So as long as we're making progress we'll keep pressing onward. Thanks for your continued support.
Sunday, August 26, 2012
Alison's had another good day today. After a good night's rest, we took it pretty easy on a rainy Sunday. We had a visit from some good friends then Alison got a nap in this afternoon. We did manage to squeeze in a couple more episodes of Downton Abby before Alison's shower this evening. But it's been a good weekend. Thanks for your continued support.
Saturday, August 25, 2012
Well Alison and I have had a really nice Saturday together. This morning we played on the computer a bit and she was doing really well spelling things. I was wearing a Chicago Bears shirt and she wrote "Dabears." That was pretty funny. Then a bit later in the day I just happened to ask if she had any movement in her left arm by any chance and she lifted her left toe for yes. So I started bending at her elbow and asking if that was it and she said no (toe down). Then at her shoulder, still no. So I was thinking what else could it be, then I saw her moving her fingers! She is now able to move her thumb, index and pinky fingers on her left hand!! That's pretty incredible!! I jokingly asked her how long she was going to wait before telling us that. And I asked her if there was anything else we should know about and she said no. But that's still great news! Tonight we've been catching up on season 2 of Downton Abby. But she and our dog, Piper, are sleeping well. Scratch that. Alison's now giggling. Now it's a proper slumber party. Thanks for your continued support.
Friday, August 24, 2012
Well Alison had a pretty good day today. Her birthday-boy brother and his wife hung out with her this morning. They brought a tiara for her computer, Princess Dy, so that was funny. This afternoon, our new friend, Amy, who is also a brainstem stroke survivor and now physical therapy assistant student, stopped by for training with our normal therapist. She's offered to help Alison with extra therapy on a regular basis and we're super excited about that. This evening we sat outside for a bit then came in and worked on the computer. The capabilities of Princess Dy are endless and we've merely scratched the surface of what could be. But it's been another good day. Thanks for your continued support.
Thursday, August 23, 2012
Alison's had a pretty good day today. She had a couple good therapy sessions and spent another afternoon hanging out with her brother. This evening we sat outside for a bit and enjoyed the nice weather. Then I had to run across town to clear out the last of our things from the house and leave the keys behind. It was bittersweet, but I know it's for the best. When Alison comes home to the apartment it'll all be worth it. But it's been a good day. Thanks for the continued prayers and support.
Wednesday, August 22, 2012
Alison's had a good, full day today. She had two good therapy sessions and spent the afternoon and early evening with her brother. This evening she hung out with a friend while her brother and his wife helped me continue to set up our apartment. I went over afterwards and helped get her ready for bed. This morning I signed papers on the sale of our house. And we had a final walk through with the buyers after work. All went well and in a few days it should be a done deal. Thanks for your continued support.
Tuesday, August 21, 2012
Alison's had a pretty good day today. She had good speech and physical therapy sessions, and this afternoon she had a nice visit from her brother and a good friend. This evening we had a good time not doing much of anything. I had to cut out a bit early tonight to go sell our washer and dryer set at our house. I'll go sign the papers on our house sale tomorrow morning, and we'll close on Friday. But the house is empty and ready for the new owners. But it's been a good day. Thanks for your continued support.
Monday, August 20, 2012
Well Alison's had an alright day today. She had a good speech therapy session and we had a nice time hanging out this evening. There weren't any visitors today, so I think she got a little bored. Tonight she said she wants to ramp up her therapies even more. So I'll be requesting they up her to having a session of speech, occupational and physical therapy every day of the week. We'll take as much as they can give and/or she can tolerate. And she said she's beginning to feel the effects of the Botox injections so that's good. Thanks for everyone's continued support.
Sunday, August 19, 2012
Wow, what a gorgeous day today. Alison and I are sitting in the shade back behind her facility listening to the cicadas and enjoying the breeze. It's a great way to wrap up a busy weekend. Earlier we continued working on getting the apartment set up and we're getting pretty close. The kitchen and bathroom are done, my bed is setup and clothes are unpacked, so I'm functional. The last part is decorating. Alison's been good but sleepy today. But a nice evening like this will make anyone relax. Her dad and his wife are on their way back to Buffalo, MO, tonight. They helped out a ton this weekend. Thanks for your continued support.
Saturday, August 18, 2012
Well it's been a busy, but productive day. I started the day early with lots of help from friends to get us moved across town. It went smoothly and we had everything moved by about 1:30pm. Alison's dad and his wife spent the morning with her while we got moved. Then this afternoon, my mother-in-law helped me get unpacked and the apartment set up. We still have a ways to go, but we made some good progress. Tonight Alison and I watched Hunger Games as part of our Saturday night slumber party. She had read the book, but the movie came out just after her stroke. We'd been waiting for it to come out on DVD and it was pretty good. We're both in bed now and hopefully a restful night is ahead. Thanks for your continued support.
Friday, August 17, 2012
Alison's had a pretty good day today. I took the day off from work to prepare for our move on Saturday. But first thing this morning we met with a company that helps people in situations like ours transition back to home. They help with the logistics of arranging for continued care, ordering special equipment, making home modifications, applying for the different programs offered through Medicaid and more. So this morning, we had a screening for the Physical Disability Waiver program through Medicaid. The people we met with were very nice, knowledgeable and helpful. It was exciting to have real conversations about how we can eventually get Alison back home. After the meeting, I spent the rest of the day finishing packing up the house. I feel it's in pretty good shape - all things considered. It's a little sad thinking about how this will be the last time I'll sleep in this house. But it's bearable knowing I'm one step closer to being able to sleep with my wife again every night. We're sure going to miss our neighbors and the neighborhood though. Thanks for your continued support.
Thursday, August 16, 2012
Alison's Botox appointment went really well today. They were more thorough with the injections than we had anticipated. She received most of the injections around her neck and left arm/hand, but they also gave a few injections around her right hand and ankle - which both have been tensing up a bit too. The doctor was very nice and Alison endured the multiple shots like a champ. This evening she got to hang out with her brother and his wife. And after that, a couple girls from church stopped by for a visit. The extra company allowed me to get over to the house and work on getting the garage packed up for our move on Saturday. I've taken Friday off work to further prepare for the move. But Alison's had a good day. We're eager for the Botox to start working, but that takes a couple of weeks. Thanks for your continued support.
Wednesday, August 15, 2012
Well Alison had another good day. She did well in her therapy sessions and enjoyed some good company with girl friends this evening. She's excited about the Botox appointment in the morning, so hopefully that'll go smoothly. We should start seeing positive effects of it in a couple weeks. Thanks for the continued support.
Tuesday, August 14, 2012
Well Alison had a really good day today. She spent most of the day with her dad and his wife. And this evening she hung out with me, my mom and nephew. She was in a really good mood today. She had two good therapy sessions: speech and physical therapies. In PT, she achieved 90 degrees of bend in her right knee that had been stiff as a board for so long. That's a big gain. And she continues to do good with soft food trials in speech as well. So a good day overall. My mom and nephew head back to western Kansas tomorrow. It's been great having them here though. Our big move is this Saturday, and I still have quite a bit to do in preparation. But I'm mostly packed (thanks mom and Jeri) - just a bunch of little things remain. I'm sure it'll come together in time. Thanks for your continued support.
Monday, August 13, 2012
Well Alison's had a pretty good day today. She had a couple good therapy sessions, and her dad and his wife came into town for a visit. My mom and mother in law made a lot of progress packing up the house. And Alison got a haircut tonight. She just had a bit of a trim, but it feels better I'm sure. And our dental hygienist friend, Megan, stopped by for an oral consultation and teeth cleaning. We now have some ideas on how to better help Alison address the ongoing grossness in her mouth. Hopefully it will be better in the future. Thanks for your continued support.
Sunday, August 12, 2012
Well Alison's had an alright day today. After our slumber party last night, I got some packing done at the house while my mom and nephew hung out with her. I came after lunch and we took a good nap this afternoon. She's been a bit uncomfortable this evening so we've been taking it easy. Our Botox appointment is Thursday morning. That's lots sooner than we were expecting, but she really needs it, so no complaints. Thanks for your continued support.

Alison's had a good day today. We got outside a couple times to enjoy the cool weather, and tonight we watched We Bought a Zoo. It was good. Alison fell asleep before it ended, but we had a nice time. Piper and I are taking a break while Alison gets ready for bed. We missed our slumber party Saturday last weekend, so it's good to be back on track. On the home front, we've begun the daunting task of packing up the house. Our big move is next weekend, and we officially close on 8/23. So wish us luck that everything comes together in time. Thanks for your continued support.

Alison's had a pretty good day today. She spent most of the day hanging out with her aunt and cousins before they had to leave this afternoon. This morning she typed she wanted to go outside - so they did to enjoy the nice weather. Then this afternoon a friend stopped in for a visit before my mom and nephew arrived around 4pm. When I got there after work, Alison was back up in her chair and on her computer. We had been joking earlier about how her talking computer needed a name. So she was supposed to think of one and let us know. So the computer is called a Dynavox, and it talks with a female British accent. So I told Alison to think of a name and let us know when she was ready to tell us. Soon afterwards she started laughing and lifting her toe a lot. So we put her on the computer, and she named her British female Dynavox, Princess Dy!!! It was HILARIOUS!! We were cracking up big time! She's so clever. : ) This evening a few of her friends came over for girls night. I'm not sure what they did, but most of the husbands were at our house watching Act of Valor. We had a good time, and I'm sure they did too. And no news on the passing of the swallowed swab. But it's not painful at this point and hopefully will pass without incident. Thanks for your continued support.

Well it's been a pretty stressful day for Alison. This morning she accidentally swallowed a mouth swab. I'm not going to get into the details of how it happened - as it shouldn't have. But we've been at the hospital getting x-rays tonight to make sure it's not going to be an issue. And the doctors think it will most likely pass naturally on its own. Let's hope so. But she's doing okay and we'll be leaving the hospital tonight. It was pretty intense this morning when it happened though. Thankfully my mom was there shortly afterwards to help. But Alison can't feel the obstruction anymore, so it's moved into the GI tract. Her aunt and cousins came into town this afternoon and have been good company to have around through all of this. Hopefully she'll rest well and the swab won't cause any issues over the next few days as it works its way out. Thanks for your continued support.

Well Alison's had a pretty good day today. She had a nice time with my mom and nephew during the day. And she had a good speech therapy session. This evening we did absolutely nothing but hang out together. It was really nice. So nothing too big to report. Her aunts and cousins are coming to visit tomorrow, so that should be fun. Thanks for your continued support.

Alison's Botox evaluation went well today. They confirmed she is a great candidate that could really benefit from a treatment like that. Now we wait for the insurance to approve it and will be back in a couple weeks for the injections. Alison was very happy to hear they could help her. So it's been a good day overall. My mom and nephew had a fun afternoon with her and we had a nice evening together. She has a low fever still, but seems to be improving. Thanks for your continued support.

Well Alison was discharged out of the hospital back to the long term care facility this evening. And she was enjoying seeing the familiar, friendly faces there when I left. We met with a neurologist this afternoon and he confirmed going for the Botox evaluation tomorrow was a smart move to help with the involuntary muscle spasms - especially the ones in her neck. It was good reassurance that we are on the right track. Now that we're back on track, we're going to really ramp up the therapy sessions. We're almost out of therapy days through insurance, so we'll be in a private pay situation by next week. But the therapy is critical, and Alison indicated she was ready for it. She wants to focus most on speech therapy, so that's what we'll focus most on. I took a half day off work to go with her to the Botox evaluation in the morning. Hopefully all goes well there. Thanks for your continued support.

Alison has continued to improve and moved out of ICU and into a normal room at the hospital today. She's still running a low fever, but she's on antibiotics to treat the UTI and her other vitals are good. We've had a good day together and had a nice visit from some friends, and my mom and nephew arrived in town this afternoon. I'm hopeful she'll rest we'll tonight. We're slated for a consultation with the neurologist tomorrow, so we'll see how that goes. Thanks for your continued support.
